Ayla & Godzilla

A papier-mâché commission based on a photo of a baby girl asleep on her father’s lap next to the beloved family cat.

Armatures were constructed of aluminum screening. The baby’s arms had to be movable, so the face and hand could be painted before being glued together and the arms “dressed.”

A heart-shaped pillow, about 8” x 8”, was substituted for Father’s lap. The pillow is solid papier-mâché with a rice-paper cover, stuffed inside with bits of torn tissue to feel realistically squeezable.

For the unkempt coat of an elderly cat, short tassels of cotton string were dipped in gesso, the strands separated, glued into place and combed.
